Westcountry Fruit Sales / The Essential Food Co has been carrying out the local supply of all fresh fruit and vegetables supplied to Key Stage1 pupils in Cornwall, Plymouth and the Isles of Scilly under the National Fruit for Schools Scheme since 2004. We are therefore responsible for the supply of approximately 3,000 pieces of fruit per day, to all 4,5 and 6 year old children in primary schools across the far South West region.

We have also provided a bespoke supply chain solution to many schools that have chosen to take back ownership and responsibility for their catering departments and for the quality and diversity of their school meal offering. We have worked very closely with numerous schools who have taken this ‘independent’ route and have found that the core values of ‘local’ sourcing (minimising food mileage) and using fresh foods where/whenever possible, does not have to come at the expense of maintaining tight financial control over the provision of high quality school meals. One such school with whom we have worked very closely with to develop a tailored, daily foodservice supply-chain solution to satisfy their needs is Penair School, a large secondary school in Truro. More than just a supplier of catering products…
In addition to the work of ensuring that our customers receive a reliable, high quality daily supply of their desired selection of fresh fruit, salads, vegetables, dairy products, dry goods and hygiene products, we have also developed an educational resource that we have provided our school customers with, that has been designed to help provide students/children with gaining a better understanding of why local, fresh food sourcing is so important. It also helps to explain how the local food supply chain works, making the link between what farmers grow/produce locally, the role and work of the wholesaler, and ultimately how the food then reaches the school kitchen. We are always happy to attend, with presentation material, to help to explain to either parents or students (or both), how the local food supply chain works.
