Saffron and Pine nuts: market price increases...
Worldwide demand for Afghan saffron is rising, and the price has doubled in the past year to an average of $1,360 per pound. Saffron is coveted not only as a spice - it's one of the world's most expensive - but as a fabric dye and perfume. It also has medicinal potential - in recent years, the pharmaceutical industry has identified saffron as a cancer suppressant, fueling even more demand for the crop. We expect wholesale prices to continue to rise. Pine nuts are also suffering from market shortages due to poor crop yields and we continue to see prices escalate.

Lemons are in very short supply, importers have warned we may run out of supply altogether before the summer is over. It has been said before the shipment even reaches our shores the produce has been sold leaving no stockpile to source from.
This problem is caused by an exceptional cold snap in Spain earlier in the year wiping out most of the harvest of "verna", this being the most popular variety used in Britain, following this, Argentina have suffered frosts leaving their crop 28% down.
